Datasets, User's Guides, and Code Books

Note, the datasets were written for use with Version 20 of SPSS, but Versions 10 through 19 are completely compatible.

Four datasets accompany the textbook Statistics: A Tool for Social Research, Second Canadian Edition, and one dataset accompanies the CNOW (0176646701). In addition, the GSS and Census User’s Guides produced by Statistics Canada, plus the summary list of variables in these data sets (i.e., Code Books) reproduced from Appendix G of the textbook, are provided below for reference purposes.

1. 2009 General Social Survey (GSS) (shortened version)

This is a shortened (1500 randomly selected cases) version of the 2009 General Social Survey (GSS). This dataset was designed to be compatible with the student version of SPSS.

2. 2009 General Social Survey (GSS) (full version)

This is the full (complete sample) version of the 2009 General Social Survey. It contains the same variables as the shortened of the GSS, but includes the original random sample of cases. ┬áNote, the full version of SPSS for Windows is required to open and use this data set.

3. 2006 Census of Canada (shortened version)

This is a shortened (1500 randomly selected cases) version of the 2006 Census of Canada. This dataset was designed to be compatible with the student version of SPSS.

4. 2006 Census of Canada (full version)

This is the full (complete sample) version of the 2006 Census of Canada. It contains the same variables as the shortened version of the Census, but includes the original random sample. Note, the full version of SPSS for Windows is required to open and use this data set.

This dataset was designed to be used with the CNOW for use with Statistics: A Tool for Social Research, Second Canadian Edition. It is compatible with the student version of SPSS.
